Santiago Chile was shaken by a magnitude-6.9 earthquake Monday, April 25.
The quake was centered 8.5 miles offshore. Chile initially issued a tsunami warning but canceled it.
Damage was limited. Chile is hit by so many earthquakes its building codes are strict about quake-proofing.
“An event of this magnitude occurs once a year, statistically, in Chile,” said the director of the National Seismology Center. “It is not uncommon for an earthquake of magnitude 7 to occur in Chile.”
Chile Interior Minister Mario Fernandez, congratulated residents in the affected areas for staying calm.
