Six countries have severed ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

That includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, as well as Egypt, Yemen, and Maldives.

Three of the countries to cut ties are Gulf Cooperation Council members. This marks an unprecedented rift between Qatar and other Gulf states.

The dispute centers on Qatar’s support of the Muslim Brotherhood, the world’s oldest Islamist movement.

The countries also accuse Doha of backing the agenda of Iran.

The three Gulf states announced the closure of transport ties with Qatar. They gave Qatari visitors and residents two weeks to leave their countries. Qatar was also expelled from a Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen.

The countries had a previous eight-month rift in 2014, but the measures taken back then were not as severe.

A split between Doha and its closest allies can have repercussions.

Gulf states have used their financial and political power to influence events in the Middle Eastern region, including in Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Qatar is also due to host the World Cup in 2022.
