Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon to push for independence vote in elections

Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon said her party will push for a new referendum on independence as an alternative to Brexit on May 30. This announcement comes ahead of Britain’s June 8 election.

Sturgeon became leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in 2014. Former leader Alex Salmond resigned after losing the Scottish independence referendum.

Sturgeon led the SNP to its biggest victory in the general election in 2015. The party won 56 out of Scotland’s 59 seats in Westminster.

Ever since British Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Brexit, Sturgeon has pressed for a second independence referendum. She vowed to keep Scotland in the European Union.

Sturgeon has clashed with May on Brexit many times. She wants a vote on independence to be held at the end of the Brexit process in 2019.
