Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said a second explosive device had been found at a different metro station in St Petersburg on April 3. It was hidden under a fire extinguisher and was made safe by security officers.

The discovery of this device came only hours after an explosion occurred on a subway car between the Sennaya Ploshchad station and the Tekhnologichesky Institut station.

Alexander Polyakov, a representative for the Anti-Terrorism Committee, said preliminary information showed nine people were killed and over twenty others injured as result of the attack. The health minister later revised that upwards to 10 dead.

The committee said it had sent a group of investigators to St Petersburg. It had opened a criminal case on charges of terrorism, but would consider all other possible causes as well.

Police were searching for a man caught on surveillance cameras thought to be connected to the attack, according to Russian news media.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was in St. Petersburg for a meeting at the time of the explosion.
