U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport on Wednesday (March 15) kicking off his first trip to Asia aimed at reassuring nervous allies facing North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threat.
Tillerson will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida. They are expected to discuss Japan’s plans to step up missile defense and possible deployment of the U.S.-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system.
They are also expected to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s concern about the U.S. trade imbalance with Japan.
Tillerson will visit South Korea next, before heading to Beijing, where he is expected to firm up a U.S. visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping next month to meet Trump.
