The Senate has approved raising the debt limit, a resolution lauded by Democrats but rejected by Republicans.
The resolution passed with a party-line vote of 50 to 49. The measure still has to go to the House, and if it passes there, to Biden’s desk. If the president signs it into law, the country’s debt limit would be raised by $2.5 trillion. But the secretary of the Treasury says this needs to happen by Wednesday. Otherwise, the nation may suffer from its first-ever default.
