Senate leader talks about health care, tax reform

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the United States needs health care and tax reform and he plans to deliver.

Sen. McConnell made it clear these are the toughest issues the Senate faces.

I think the health care bill in the Senate’s going to be written by senators,” he said in an exclusive Reuter interview. “We’re involved in extensive discussions three days a week with every single member, all 52 of us trying to come up with an approach on health care that can get a minimum of 50 votes in order to pass the Senate.”

McConnell also made it clear that tax reform was a necessity—and that like health care, it would be a difficult and time-consuming process.

“We need to understand this is not easily done either,” he said. “Not, in my view, quite as challenging as health care, but very challenging. It’s an important need for the country. We need to get the growth rate up.”

McConnell also addressed President Trump’s budget. The senator made it clear that Congress holds the purse-strings.

“Every president’s budget is a recommendation, but in fact the spending priorities are made by the Congress,” he said.
