A pair of twins in Denton, Texas, were born in two different years after their mother went into labor earlier than she expected on New Year’s Eve.

The mother of the twin girls, Kali Jo Scott, had to be taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton on New Year’s Eve, FOX 4 reported. The mother had arrived at the hospital a week and a half before their due date for monitoring, but after she arrived at the hospital, she had to be taken in for a cesarean section to give birth to her twins.

As the timing of the procedure dawned on her, the parents realized the very real possibility that their twins could be born not only on separate days, but also in separate years.

“We had kinda joked wouldn’t it be funny if, you know with the holiday and New Year’s Eve over the weekend, if they had their own birthday,” Kali Jo Scott said. “And then it turned out that was more of a possibility than we realized.”

The first twin baby, Annie Jo, was born at 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 31, making her the last baby born at the hospital in 2022. About six minutes later, at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, Effie Rose was born, making her the first baby born at the hospital in 2023.

“It kind of happened so quick we haven’t processed all of it yet,” said the father, Cliff Scott.

Though they were born early, Kali Jo Scott reported the babies are “happy and healthy and sleepy, which is really nice.”

The unique timing of the births will help the fraternal twins have a bit more of their own personal identity.

“I think with twins, they’re not identical, but you know you always still want to make sure that they have their own individual personality and that they know they are special and unique, so I think that this just kind of gets to add to that,” Kali Jo Scott said.

The mother joked about some of the other implications that came with having the twins born in different years.

Youth sports leagues are often based around a child’s birth year, which could mean the twins may be unable to always compete in the same age group.

Another potential drawback could come up around tax season.

“Our friends were making fun of us for the tax deduction issue since we only get one tax deduction for last year, but I think that’s just fine,” Kali Jo Scott said. “There are some people who that is their first thought and that was certainly not ours.”
