German police said on Thursday (March 9) they had detained a man who attacked seven people at Duesseldorf central train station with an axe.

A police spokesman said the suspected assailant had been taken into custody. Three of those attacked were seriously injured. The spokesman said police were investigating whether more attackers had been involved but had no indication of that.

“We have arrested that person and got hold of the axe. At the moment the whole station is closed. All passengers were escorted outside. At the moment we are searching the whole station and platforms because we are not sure the attacker acted alone. We think so but we are not absolutely sure. We are still searching,” said Markus Niesczery, spokesman for the city’s police.

Police said there was no serious threat of further attacks. The rail station remained shut down.
