Shen Yun Performing Arts brought New York audiences the classical traditions of ancient Chinese Dance and Music. Psychiatry professor, Dr. Lois Moylan from Molloy College, said the stories were deeply touching.

“It was just absolutely amazing. It was something you feel in your heart and your soul. It was incredible,” said Dr. L. Moylan.

“The art in it was just impressive, the amazing things these people can do with their human body, and the beauty and the music as well,” said Moylan. “The woman who played the traditional Chinese instruments. I was just awed after I saw it. So, all in all, it was just an amazing experience.”

“The staging was absolutely stunning, and just the dancers their facilities are incredible, their technique is amazing, it was mind-blowing, it was really beautiful,” said Kimberly Fitch Vranas.

Vranas is a dancer and choreographer. She was blown away by the performance and had immense praise for the overall production and every detail of the choreography.

“Because some of the movement …It was when she passes away and he does a jump, and usually it just like, when you do it like a toe touch or straddle whatever, that’s very joyful, but because of his acting, it was a really dramatic moment. And it completely changed the dynamic of what that movement was, just because he was so passionate, as an actor,” added Vranas. “So that’s not an easy feat to make a movement that typically joy as to …have that kind of heartfelt.”

She then explained: “As a choreographer and dancer like that’s something that whenever I perform or create or something you want to make sure the intention. The people know what they’re dancing about or what you’re creating, and those moments are so specific. I think that you can absolutely tell they’ve spent the time to know what they’re actually dancing about. It is not just facially, it’s like with every part of the body.”

“There are so many beautiful moments and I think it really does touch on all the emotions … you kind of go on a little ride there,” she added. “It really does have everything you’d want in a performance.”

For thousands of years, classical Chinese dance was used to express traditional values like reverence for the heavens, emphasizing virtue, and the belief that good is rewarded and evil is punished.

“I think it’s educational at the same time. It’s like entertaining but just sit there holding on to that part of culture that is often lost … I mean that’s not part of my culture, so it’s for me to learn. And then for people that it is their culture, they’re learning but they’re also … it keeps it in their life. So I think it’s it’s a beautiful thing to have.”

“I think when they introduce the next piece when they said we’re originally from heaven and we’re trying to get home back to heaven. And I think that really hit home for me. because I’m religious and I think that tied everything together and what they were trying to say and what they were trying to do with their pieces,” said Courtney Fostvedt, a recently graduated actor.

“It’s very uplifting. It’s something I’ll remember for sure. And it’s something I’m going to see again,” said Moylan. “It’s something I’m thinking of going home again,
and remembering this and thinking how we can actually … I want to use it even in a class that I’m going to teach.”
