The Shen Yun Performing Arts Global Company arrived in San Jose, California, for five performances at the Center for the Performing Arts.

“The precision of the dancers, and the accuracy, how everybody works together, their bodies are in exactly the same formation,” said Samantha McInnes, interior designer at Casey Howard Designs.

Shen Yun dancers spend about half the year touring worldwide, and the other half training for the upcoming year’s program.

“I’m sitting there watching it thinking it would be so hard not to drop something or trip or do something and everyone is moving perfectly in sync the whole time. It’s very inspiring,” said Tony Foti, a freelance illustrator.

“The production quality was fantastic,” said Sarah Wittry, an actress. “I really enjoyed seeing the sets, the way the actors dip down and then flew away on the screen was so fun to see.”

Shen Yun dancers interact with the animated backdrop to help complete the storytelling.

“Shen Yun is special and different because it shows all of the stories that are related to the Chinese culture,” said Wittry.

Much of traditional Chinese culture is divinely inspired, and audience members observed the characters showing respect to higher entities in times of distress.

“If you believe, and you have faith, you will survive, and the world will become a better place,” noted Angela Reed, Vice President at Comerica Bank. “And it’s just—how can you not be touched by that?”

After watching the performance, audience members returned home with new perspectives.

“It feels like a world I’m not used to,” said Foti. “And something that I was not raised in, and so when I see it, it’s still really exciting. It’s like a different world entirely.”

I think it’s a huge reminder of how we should act towards each other, and how when you are closed-minded, that it’s hurting the world, and that you should just take a step back, reflect, and don’t let the outside world dictate who you are,” said Reed. “If you go back to your true beliefs and be a good human being, we can maybe save the world.”
