Kindness and humanity are what Xavier Devaugerme, a winery manor owner, saw in the performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts in Roubaix, on Feb. 23.

“I thought it was really wonderful,” said Xavier Devaugerme, a winery manor owner. “Very, very, very lively, very magical with a lot of culture behind it. And I was very surprised to see that there was an important religious aspect in it, a connection to the divine spirit in a culture that we all think is communist.”

According to its program book, each Shen Yun dance performance includes classical Chinese dances, folk dances, and dances that portray legends and stories from China.

“I was very surprised to see that there was another perspective, that there still was this classical Chinese culture behind it and I find it very courageous to do this show. From the start, they are very beautiful, so it is very, very serene, we feel a lot of serenity, a lot of peace and happiness too, we feel that we lean towards happiness. It makes us happy, as French people, to see that it still lives in China and that there is still a lot to discover there, and we hope that you will have the upper hand at the end.”

Along with classical Chinese dance pieces, Shen Yun performances feature many story-based dances that portray myths and legends that have been passed down through generations, as well as modern pieces that reflect real-life scenes in contemporary China.

“I, myself am a Christian, and I find that there is a lot of similarities to the Falun Dafa belief. It’s all new so I’m glad to know that you believe in God and that you have this hope that reaches beyond this life. It really warms my heart to see that it still exists in China and that it can be reborn at the right moment,” said Devaugerme. “I think that this color, this fairy-tale, this joy, brings to any country anyway, we all need this joy. And the events that are coming are probably not very joyful, so we really need to make provision of this joy, this happiness, this hope and you are all part of it, thank you for bringing it to us.”
