Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra’s Stunning Performance Brings National Pride to the People of Hsinchu

On the evening of Sept. 21, Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra gave its second performance in Taiwan. Arriving at the Hsinchu City Performing Arts Center, they were met with warm welcome by fans. After more than an hour musical performance, the audience gave the orchestra a seemingly endless round of applause—they still wanted more. In the end, four encores were added for the nearly one thousand attendees.

Classical Music Director Chuang Haoyin said, “Everyone in the full house appreciated the musical pieces performed by the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra. They had in them the kind of pride and joy of the Chinese people.”

Hsinchu City Performing Arts Center welcomed the internationally renowned Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra for the first time. The performance won the admiration of many of the city’s business leaders.

Lai Chungyou, manager of a technology company said, “My first symphony experience was dedicated to Shen Yun. It was very moving, especially when I heard the ‘Plum Blossom’ song.”

For thousands of years, the plum blossom has been a powerful cultural symbol for the Chinese people, and in Taiwan, is the national flower of Taiwan.

“It’s the first time I’ve experienced this kind of indescribable mood,” he continued, “It was so touching. I’ve been listening to this song since I was a child. It was my first time listening to the song sung in this classical style. It was the first time I felt the song really embodies the feeling of the country.”

Hotel manager Chang Hsuanliang said, “This is the first time I’ve attended such a performance. Just now when I heard the tenor, I felt so stunned hearing his voice—it was a totally different kind of experience.”

According to the established foundations of Western musical orchestral music, it is balanced by the characteristics of Chinese instruments. Chuang Haoyin highly praised the orchestra’s emphasis on traditional Chinese moral virtues.

Chuang Haoyin also said, “Our ethnic nature has a kind of softness, tolerance, gentleness, and gracefulness, that completely appears [in the performance]. This is our extraordinary ethnic character —totally different from the West. The musical pieces and the whole arrangement  completely use Chinese musical methods. I believe the whole audience should understand this through listening.”

The Shen Yun symphony orchestra weaves together a combination of its own original compositions and Western classical pieces.
