Shots fired outside Alabama State University stadium stopped a high school football game on Aug. 24, according to local news reports.

Video footage shows show players and spectators running from the field during the game between Carver-Montgomery and Jeff Davis, after multiple shots rang out as Carver was getting ready to run a play.

The shots occurred near the walkway on the west side of the stadium, according to the Montgomery Advertiser, where Carver Wolverines and their fans were at the time of the shooting.

The shooting came as Carver lead Jeff Davis 19-3 early in the fourth quarter.

Social media videos show fans leaving and moving up the stands as players from both teams ran back to their locker rooms. Play resumed 10 minutes later, according to the Advertiser.

“That’s crazy,” Carver running back Terrance Webster told the Advertiser. “We were out here having a great game, and then shots fired at the end. It’s sad to say that in Montgomery, you can’t have fun.”

Carver’s color guard coach, LaToya Mullins, said told WSFA she heard the gunshots.

“We were out here enjoying the game, and we heard gunshots in the fourth quarter, so everybody got down and we just evacuated the place immediately,” Mullins said.

Mullins said her main focus during the ordeal was getting her students safe and to their parents.

“It’s just sad, and I really wish they didn’t have to go through that, especially at a football game. It’s ridiculous.”

According to WSFA, Alabama State University said in a statement that it had leased its football stadium to the city of Montgomery for several of its high school football games and confirmed that authorities are now investigating the incident. “At no time were any ASU students in danger due to this incident,” said the statement.

At the time of writing, there were no reports of casualties.
