During this year’s 30th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), Hallyu World’s host, Hyesoo, interviewed famous Japanese film director, Shunji Iwai, who is also a video artist, writer, and documentary maker.

Iwai was famous for and directed “Love Letter” and now recently came with a new anime movie called the “Case of Hana and Alice.” His work is about the feelings of youthful love in films which can be seen in his style of work that has a sense of innocence and purity.

Iwai said that four of his films were broadcast last year at TIFF and five this year. Hana and Alice were also able to show because of the main actress You Aoi who attended this year. The animation of the live film was also shown, “After 10 years, I suddenly wanted to do it, so I made it into an animation,” Iwai said in the interview.

When asked whether he liked this work Iwai commented, “Of course, I really like this. Actually, I like each work. Honestly, each work was cute when they were in the process.”

Iwai’s film cast the main roles as regular female students, but he made it this way because it was a great setting and background, “Maybe, I was shooting the films like when I was in elementary school, secondary school, high school, and college… Everyone has experiences that time, everyone had experiences in school. I thought it could be a great background to illustrate in”

When asked about his duty as a director, he said, “…how to make the actors more beautiful and brilliant also is my duty. So, helping them achieve that is my biggest duty. I always think and do it this way.”
