Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald has said a referendum on Irish unity will be held before 2030. This would see citizens of Northern Ireland voting on leaving the United Kingdom and, if the vote is successful, rejoining the rest of Ireland under one government. McDonald’s call for a referendum follows the appointment of Michelle O’Neill as Northern Ireland’s first ever nationalist First Minister, in what Sinn Fein are taking as a sign of change.
