A happy dog just found her forever home after 525 days at a shelter. Cassie lived at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton in Ohio for nearly a year-and-a-half until Wednesday, Jan. 16, when the 5-year-old dog was finally adopted.

“Every day for 525 days she has patiently waited for that perfect person to walk through the doors and pick her and today was her day!” the organization wrote on Facebook. “Our staff may have shed a few tears saying goodbye and there may have been a few squeals of excitement, but we are so very happy for Cassie and her new family!”

Jessica Hendrickson of West Carrollton, Cassie’s new owner, said she was looking for a dog for a while before she came across Cassie’s profile on the Humane Society’s website, reported Dayton Daily News.

“My heart went out to her because she had been there so long,” Hendrickson said.

Cassie arrived at the shelter on Aug. 9, 2017 and stayed longer than any dog in recent memory, said Jessica Garringer, marketing and development manager at the Humane Society, to Dayton Daily News.

While Cassie was adopted a couple times, it soon became clear that Cassie would be happiest in a home without cats or small children.

“We narrowed it down that she needed to be in a home where the spotlight is on her only,” Garringer told the media outlet.

During her time at the Humane Society, Cassie participated in the START program, a partnership with the Dayton Dog Training Club. While there, she learned basic commands and then moved on to more advanced dog training.

The Humane Society’s Facebook post also mentioned Cassie’s time in the START program.

“She is an extremely sweet and loving girl and has been a rockstar in our START training program,” the post reads. That experience landed her a spot in a commercial for Jeff Schmitt Auto Group, as well as an opportunity to find a home.

According to Dayton Daily News, Hendrickson was at home studying the Humane Society website, reading about Cassie, when she looked up at her television.

“The Jeff Schmitt ad was on right as I was reading her profile,” Hendrickson said. “I fell in love with her. I thought, ‘all right, we need each other.'”

And so, after 525 days, Cassie’s day came.

“Even though I never had contact with Cassie I loved her sweet ‘smiling’ face. I’m beyond words to know she’s found her forever home. Thank you Cassie’s new Mom!!” reads the Facebook post.

When Hendrickson came and picked Cassie up at the Humane Society, “the entire staff was in the lobby hugging the dog and shedding tears,” Garringer said. “It was a celebratory day.”

It seems Cassie is enjoying her forever home. Hendrickson said Cassie immediately curled up in bed and went to sleep when she arrived at her new home.

“She is so sweet and loving and mellow,” Hendrickson said. “She comes up and wants to be petted and have her belly scratched and paws at you if you stop. She is super affectionate, but also independent. I like that about her.”

For someone, somewhere, today IS the day!! ???????????? #adoptdontshop #rescue
