A former NHL player’s son died in a bus crash last week, and he told Canadian news outlets that he was “so proud” of his son before his passing.

Chris Joseph, who played for the Edmonton Oilers, confirmed to CTV News that his son, Jaxon, died in a bus crash that killed 14 other people. Joseph said that his son was “never the star, never the grinder, but very flexible.”

“Every team he’s played on, he’s always been described as a glue guy,” Joseph said. “We always hoped that he would go further and further,” Joseph added.

Jaxon was 20 years old, playing for a junior league team, the Humboldt Broncos. In all, 10 Broncos players and 5 others died in the crash, and about 14 others were injured.

“For me, the hockey community is so, so small and we’re so tight,” Joseph told CTV. “Hockey players go and they battle for two hours and after the game is over there’s much respect for everybody.”

The bus crash triggered prominent figures, like President Donald Trump and Canadian leader Justin Trudeau, to post their condolences. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the Broncos organization, the families, the friends, the fans and entire Humboldt community. #PrayersForHumboldt,” Hockey Canada also tweeted.

The accident occurred on Highway 35 near Tisdale in Saskatchewan, Canada. A semi-truck was also involved in the devastating accident.

“The [semi] driver is not in custody,” Saskatchewan RCMP assistant commissioner Curtis Zablocki told USA Today. “As part of the process of the investigation, the driver was detained initially. Our investigative processes were implemented and the driver subsequently is being released.”

In an initial investigation, it was revealed that the truck was going west on Highway 335 as the team bus was heading north on Highway 35.

According to the team’s website, the Broncos has players between the ages of 16 and 21.
