Son of Suspect in Alleged Trump Assassination Plot Arrested on Federal Charges

The son of a man arrested for allegedly trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump has been taken into custody and charged with possessing child sex images, according to court documents.

Oran Alexander Routh of North Carolina was arrested on Sept. 24, a day after a federal magistrate judge signed an arrest warrant, according to the docket for his case.

Oran Routh received child pornography on or around July 23 and possessed it on or about Sept. 21, according to charging papers from a special agent with the FBI.

Agents searching Oran Routh’s residence in Greensboro on Sept. 21 as part of an investigation “unrelated to child exploitation” seized electronic devices, on which they found hundreds of child pornography files, special agent Garrett Foo said.

The Epoch Times is not providing a link to the charging papers because they contain explicit descriptions of the files.

Oran Routh lives alone, according to court documents.

Investigators also discovered chats on a cell phone taken from the house that showed the phone’s user asking an individual who was advertising child pornography for sale for a preview, and two files were sent, according to the FBI.

Oran Routh did not have an attorney listed on the docket.

He has been quoted in recent days in multiple news outlets after his father, Ryan Routh, was arrested at a golf course in Florida. Oran Routh told the Daily Mail, for instance, that his father hates Trump and that he himself does not like Trump but that his father is not violent and that he did not believe he would target the former president.

U.S. Secret Service agents say Ryan Routh was lying in wait for Trump and wanted to assassinate the former president, who is trying to win the November presidential election.

Ryan Routh made his second court appearance on Monday and was ordered held without bail by a judge who noted he has traveled to Ukraine in recent years and allegedly penned a note that acknowledged he would try to assassinate Trump.

Prosecutors told the judge that Ryan Routh has no ties to West Palm Beach, where the course is located. Defense attorneys said Ryan Routh has ties to relatives in North Carolina.

Both Oran Routh and Ryan Routh are currently registered to vote in North Carolina, according to the state’s voter database. Both are listed as living in Guilford County but at different addresses.

Oran Routh has voted in Democrat primaries in 2008, 2020, and 2022, according to the database, while his father voted in the Democrat primary in March. Their votes in general elections were not detailed.

Ryan Routh allegedly left behind a note in a box he dropped off at another person’s house months before the assassination attempt, writing that he had failed to assassinate Trump, according to court filings.

“I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster,” Routh allegedly wrote.

Phone records acquired by law enforcement, according to court documents, also showed that Ryan Routh had been near West Palm Beach on multiple occasions leading up to the Sept. 15 attempt.
