A restaurant in Cape Town has just won a Guinness World Record. Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers and Ribs has been recognized for its offering of 207 different kinds of milkshakes.

The eatery won the ‘Most Varieties of Milkshakes Commercially Available’ title in 2019.

Now, locals are coming out of a long, hard lockdown to enjoy the sweet treat. The restaurant’s range of milkshakes includes frozen yogurt shakes, vegan shakes, fruit shakes, ice shakes, and many more.

Pete Goffe-Wood was one of the five judges appointed by Guinness World Records to verify the record. He says: “As each milkshake came out, it was numbered, and my job was to make sure that I had the list of ingredients … so I could verify that those ingredients were in.”

In the kitchen, chef Busiswe Fumbalele is part of the team that comes up with new milkshake ideas. That’s including flavors like Chocolate Brownie, Caramel Fudge, Lunch Bar, Butterscotch, Peanut Butter & Crunchie, and Honeycomb.

She says she finds inspiration all around her.

“When I travel by minibus taxi, I notice people eating chocolates, like Lunch Bars, Bar One. I realized there is a good idea here. I tried making a milkshake mixing all of those together with peanut butter crunch or Bar One to make that and it is delicious.”

South Africa endured one of the strictest lockdowns for COVID-19 in the world.

Mask wearing is mandatory in all public places. For some, simple treats like these can help alleviate the stress of these uncertain times.
