Dressed in black with bulletproof vests and handguns, their faces covered by balaclavas, a force of some 20 police officers entered an apartment building in Melilla, Spain, on Friday, June 23, to arrest a man on terrorism-related charges.
Spain’s Interior Ministry said the Moroccan man was using a corporate network to help fund the recruiting of volunteers for Islamist terrorist groups ISIS and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
Police entered his apartment in the Spanish north African enclave of Melilla with dogs and investigators, immediately beginning to review books and computers, shows footage released by Spanish police.
The 40-year-old man, who has Danish citizenship, is accused of being involved in a network which has defrauded over 8 million euros ($8.9 million) through 24 companies in Denmark.
The Interior Ministry said the recruiting network he funded had an international reach and was probably one of the most active to have been dismantled in Spain. The network has helped send at least 10 people from Spain, Germany, and Denmark into conflict zones, said the ministry.
Spain has detained 173 people accused of having links to Islamic terrorist groups since the country raised its alert level to 4, the second highest, on June 26, 2015.
