Taiwan is heading to the polls Saturday in an election some are calling a choice between democracy and dictatorship. Just ahead of this, however, the self-ruled island has seen a spike in cyberattacks.

NTD spoke to retired Col. John Mills, a senior fellow at the Center for Security Policy, who’s on the ground in Taiwan.

“As regards to cyberattacks,” said Mr. Mills, “we had the Foreign Minister Joseph Wu talk about this. The tip of the spear is—you guessed it—TikTok.”

“They love TikTok here, but they’re also very good at filtering TikTok, which we should do a better job of in the United States.”

He said he was confident that the Taiwanese Computer Emergency Response Team would be able to repel any cyberattacks. Speaking of attempted attacks from mainland China, he said, “I don’t think they’re going to be able to reach in and manipulate the voting in any way.”
