The Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro glowed a brilliant green from its perch overlooking the beachside city on Thursday (March 16) when the landmark was lit in Irish green ahead of St. Patrick’s Day.

Ireland’s Minister of State for Training, Skills, and Innovation John Halligan T.D. attended the event during his weeklong visit to Brazil to advance bilateral tourism.

According to the Irish government, Brazil traded US$546.4 million (509 million euro) with Ireland in 2006 while Ireland had US$244.7 million (228 million euro) of exports to Brazil the same year.

The Christ statue was lit one day before St. Patrick’s Day, which is celebrated in Ireland and throughout much of the world on March 17.
