A store clerk shot and killed a suspect during an attempted robbery in Houston, Texas, when the robber shot at the clerk after trying to pass off a $20 counterfeit bill, according to a news release issued by the Houston Police Department.

The incident occurred in a Super Qwik Food Store located at 8030 Fulton Street around 10 p.m. on Monday, June 29, according to the news release. As indicated, the robbery suspect, 56, entered the food store and tried to buy something using a $20 counterfeit bill, according to KHOU 11.

However, when the clerk confronted the suspect regarding the counterfeit bill, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot at the clerk. KHOU 11 indicated that the robbery suspect fired at least one shot.

According to KHOU 11, the robbery suspect had made his way towards the clerk area prior to shooting the clerk.

The bullet fired from the suspect’s gun is believed to have missed the clerk by mere inches, according to police, KHOU 11 reported. The clerk then armed himself.

“Luckily and fortunately for the convenience store clerk, he had a gun with him. He was able to return fire,” Horn said. Horn also said that the robbery suspect was shot multiple times by the clerk, and then collapsed on to the ground inside the store.

According to Fox News, the Houston Police received a call about a robbery that was taking place and dispatched officers to the scene. By the time the police arrived on the scene, the robbery suspect was already shot.

The news release indicated that the paramedics who were also there on the scene transported the robbery suspect to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died.

Through the surveillance video captured by cameras in the store, police were able to confirm the incident and said that the clerk was lucky to be alive because it seemed like the bullet had narrowly missed him. The store clerk was not hurt by the incident.

The Houston Police Department investigators said that they will be treating this incident as a robbery, and no charges have been brought up against the store clerk for the death of the robbery suspect, according to Fox News.

According to KHOU 11, the robbery suspect’s records indicated that he had a prior criminal history record, and at the time of the robbery, he was out on parole for a similar crime committed back in the summer of 2019.
