A magnitude-6.2 earthquake hit between Turkey and the isle of Lesbos on June 12. The epicenter was 4 miles deep in the Aegean Sea, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management office.
Dozens of homes were damaged on Lesbos, and 10 people hurt. No injuries were reported from Turkey, nearer to the center.
“We are advising residents in affected areas of Lesbos to remain outdoors until buildings can be inspected,” senior Greek seismologist Efthimios Lekkas said.
Sixty-one-year-old Ayse Selvi was in her summer home in Karaburun, Turkey.
“All the picture frames fell on the ground,” she said. “I have no idea how I ran out. I’m scared to go inside now.”
Earthquake experts in Greece and Turkey warned residents to expect aftershocks.
