The rapid spread of the Omicron variant boosted supermarkets’ sales over the key period around Christmas. People deserted restaurants and pubs and turned to the supermarket aisles to entertain smaller groups at home. Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Marks & Spencer all saw record sales of their champagne, sparkling wines, and premium range food over the Christmas holidays.
