Swedish police have arrested the suspected driver behind the attack in Stockholm on April 8.
Prosecutors have confirmed that he is a 39-year-old Uzbekistan-born man.
The man had been on authorities’ radar for some time, according to Sweden’s domestic intelligence agency.
A driver drove a truck through a busy shopping street before crashing into a department store the day before. Four people were killed and 15 were injured.
Authorities are still looking for people who may be associated with the suspect.
There are unconfirmed reports of explosives found in the truck.
Sweden’s prime minister is labelling it a terror attack.
“Terrorists want us to be afraid, want us to change our behaviour, want us to not live our lives normally. But that is what we are going to do. So terrorists can never defeat Sweden. Never,” said PM Stefan Lofven.
Lofven tightened Sweden’s borders following the incident.
Police are conducting thorough checks on vehicles traveling between Sweden and Denmark.
Many countries in Europe have offered support and condolences. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated, “An attack on any of our member states in at attack on us all.”
There’s been no immediate claim of responsibility.
It’s the latest in a string of attacks where trucks or cars have driven into crowds in Europe in the past year.
