Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian forces have “completely destroyed” the eastern Donbas region, and that they are trying to kill as many Ukrainians as possible. Moscow says that it will soon get full control of Luhansk, as it ramps up its assault.

Russia marked the 77th anniversary of its victory over nazi Germany. President Vladimir Putin addressed a large military parade claiming that Russian soldiers are defending the motherland in the Donbas.

On a visit to Moscow, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres proposes to coordinate with the Red Cross, Ukraine, and Russia to create humanitarian corridors out of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol. And residents of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine say they are struggling to survive without many of the basics.

A defense minister today backed Ukrainian strikes on military targets behind Russian lines, even if the weapons used have been donated by the U.K. It follows Russia’s further threat of potentially using nuclear weapons. The defense minister dismissed the threat as mere “bravado” and said Ukraine is very well prepared in the Donbas region.

Russia says it plans to take full control of Donbas and southern Ukraine during the second phase of what it calls its special military operation. On Thursday Russia claimed victory over Mariupol.
