The restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is projected to finish by April 2024—that’s after a devastating fire in 2019 ravaged the historic church. So does that mean the tourist attraction isn’t available in the meantime? Not necessarily—thanks to augmented reality.

In Paris, while workers are removing the final parts of the scaffolding surrounding the Notre Dame cathedral, architects are preparing for the restoration. To do so, they need 19th-century plans and drawings. Our reporter met with “archive curators in Paris” who look after the precious plans.
