Taiwan protests being barred from WHO meeting

Taiwan wants to be included in the World Health Organization’s meetings.

This time the WHO—or China—has said, “No.”

In past years Taiwan has attended WHO assemblies with “observer” status. The U.N. does not recognize Taiwan, so it cannot join as a nation. This is because communist China demands a “one China” policy.

“Taiwan and the World Health Organization need each other,” said Chuang Chia-Yuan, one of the protesters.  “The World Health Organization denying Taiwan’s participation (in the World Health Organization) not only violates medical human rights, medical ethics and the principle of justice, but also surrender to the hegemony of China, discriminating and abandoning 23 million people in Taiwan.”

Taiwan residents are angry and confused.

“We could participate in the World Health Assembly as an observer in the past, why can’t we go this year?” asked Pai Chu-Cheng, a 56-year-old dentist from Taiwan. “Our Taiwanese are very concerned about it and hoping to be an observer, contributing our medical technologies to the whole world every year.”

Taiwan is sending a delegation anyway, daring communist China to deny them.
