Taiwan: Unclear Who Would Aid the Island in a War

Taiwan’s foreign minister said the island would fight for itself in the event of a war with China. He also noted the island isn’t asking other countries to fight for it.

In an interview with Sky News last Friday, Taiwan’s foreign minister Joseph Wu said the island is determined to defend itself. Asked which country might fight alongside Taiwan. Wu replied, “This is a very good question.”

Wu’s remarks come as the United States—Taiwan’s closest defense partner—opts not to say whether it would come to the island’s aid.

President Joe Biden has repeatedly said Washington would defend it in case of a war.
