With America-friendly candidate William Lai winning Taiwan’s presidential election on Saturday, what does this mean for peace in the region? What message does this election result sent to China?

NTD spoke to Gregory Copley, the president of the International Strategic Studies Association, to find out more about the Taiwanese electorate’s response to recent threats and saber-rattling from China’s communist regime.

“It sends to China the clear message that Xi Jinping made the wrong approach in trying to influence this election so openly, and was then seen to fail in that attempt,” said Mr. Copley. “So Xi Jinping now has one more embarrassment to add to his list, one more failure.”

Mr. Copley said he expected China’s Xi to come under even more pressure from within his own regime for repeatedly claiming he would take Taiwan by force—and then repeatedly failing to do so.

“So he is now in a much more precarious position than he was even a few weeks ago—and it was already a dire situation for him then.”
