Dennis is a good man. he decided to test the goodness of others with a little experiment. To accomplish his test he uses his own wallet, filling it with $100 cash, a metro card, and his blue Chase credit card. he walks down the sidewalk of a busy shopping area and purposely drops his wallet and pretends not to notice. What will happen? Who will pick it up, if anyone? What will they do with it? Those are the questions that Dennis was searching the answers to, and he had all of those questions answered.
With two friends hiding unnoticed and recording video of what the response will be, the first few people simply walk right by, either not noticing or purposely ignoring it (somebody else’s problem?). Along comes David, who sees the wallet and picks it up. Immediately, he looks inside of the wallet and proceeds to make a phone call. To who? We don’t know yet.
David then heads into the mall and into a store while Dennis and crew keep recording. After a short while, David hits the check-out counter to make some purchases. he pulls out a wallet and from it draws a blue Chase credit card. You can hear Dennis in the background as it’s being recorded telling his friends, “That’s my Chase card!” “That’s my Chase card !” “That’s my Chase card!” Yes, three times you hear the emotions of the owner of the dropped wallet feel the violation of someone using his money to make purchases!
Dennis chooses not to confront David right away. Instead, he instructs his camera crew duo to keep recording and follow David. David exits the mall and starts walking, eventually making his way to a residential neighborhood. Make that Dennis’ neighborhood! Dennis tells his friends, “You know this is my street, right? This is where I live.” Meanwhile, David stops, pulls out Dennis’ wallet and makes another phone call. To who? We still don’t know. But we will know soon.
David walks up to a house and knocks on the door. Dennis, who can be heard in the background again, says “Oh man, that’s my house!” This sets up the confrontation as Dennis goes to David and explains that he has his wallet. Furthermore, he explains that they have been following him and recording him for three hours! David gives a full explanation. Yes, he picked up the wallet. Yes, he brought it into the mall. Yes, he made purchases with a blue Chase card. But not Dennis’ blue Chase credit card. David has his own, and David was just returning the wallet to Dennis. He checked the address on the driver’s license and called his friend, twice, to see if he could help direct him to the location of Dennis’ home.
Dennis is humbled and appreciative and offers David $100 cash as gratitude for doing the right thing. “That never happens,” says Dennis. Yes, Dennis, it does! At first, David refuses the cash, but Dennis is insistent, so he accepts. David tells Dennis, “Not everybody is good, but I believe in good karma. If it were my wallet, I’d want the same thing to happen.”
Dennis is a good man. So is David. What makes the both good men? because they both recognize that we can’t help everyone, but we can all help someone.
