HONG KONG—Nearly two million people held hands forming a human chain known as the Baltic Way in 1989: a peaceful protest against soviet rule. Also seeking universal suffrage, protestors in Hong Kong rekindled the demonstration 30 years later on Aug. 23.

What started as a protest against a now-shelved extradition bill has become a massive push for democracy in the former British colony. The human chain was called the “Hong Kong Way.”
