Uninhabited Henderson Island, 3,100 miles west of South America has the world’s highest density of plastic trash on its beaches.
The island It is only 6 miles long and 3.2 miles wide, for an area of 14.4 square miles.
Dr. Jennifer Lavers, from Tasmania University, published a study in April 2017 showing that the island’s beaches held the highest density of plastic trash in the world.
She estimates that 19.5 tons of garbage litter the beaches—37.7 million pieces of plastic trash.
This works out to 671 items per square meter (1.19 square yards), the highest plastic trash density ever found.
