A 60-year-old tourist was shot in the head while traveling in Canada, authorities said.

Investigators are searching for a suspect after the German man was shot while driving west on Highway 1A through Morley in southern Alberta on Aug. 2, reported Global News.

The shot caused the car the tourist was driving to veer off the road and crash into a tree.

RCMP Sgt. Tom Kalis said that it appears the suspect was inside of a small black car being driven by a man with long brown hair and shot the German while passing the tourist’s vehicle on the highway.

“One of the theories that we’re examining at this time is that there may be a road rage incident involving … a small black car that was traveling in a similar direction and was passing this truck at the time of the impact and the gunshot,” Kalis said. “We’ve got a fairly significant search scene out there and we have a number of specialized resources that are scouring the scene. We’re not seeing any evidence that would support other theories.”

Kalis told CTV that officials are considering the shooting isolated.

“We don’t perceive a risk to the public at all. It’s certainly a rather serious and disturbing incident but we don’t have any evidence to suggest that this is anything relating to series of crimes,” he said.

The tourist was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries but was conscious and talking at the time.

The man was with three family members who were not injured in the crash. They were headed to Banff National Park at the time of the shooting, reported CBC.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Cochrane RCMP at 1-403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
