House Passes Defense Policy Bill That Attaches SAVE America Act

The Trump administration revoked over 6,000 student visas for overstays and legal violations, including a small number for "support for terrorism," a State Department official said on Monday.

The move aligns with the administration's ongoing efforts to tighten immigration policies. This year, the State Department directed U.S. diplomats overseas to closely screen visa applicants perceived as hostile to the United States or with a history of political activism.

Of the 6,000 visa cancellations, approximately 4,000 were due to legal violations, primarily assault, with some involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and burglary, according to the official.

Additionally, 200–300 visas were revoked for terrorism-related reasons, based on a State Department rule citing ineligibility for "engaging in terrorist activities" or "having certain links to terrorist organizations."

The State Department did not clarify the meaning of "support for terrorism." The Trump administration has targeted some students protesting for Palestine, saying their actions displayed anti-Semitic behavior.

In May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the number of visas he has revoked was probably in the thousands, adding that he believed there was still more to do.

"I don't know the latest count, but we probably have more to do," Rubio told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that oversees foreign affairs.

In a CBS interview <a href="https://x.com/StateDept/status/1957120912806846916?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1957120912806846916%7Ctwgr%5Eed675bb7c6b1ddd0e4e3a148cfcf962a78bfc096%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.epochtimes.com%2Fgb%2F25%2F8%2F19%2Fn14576423.htm">posted</a> by the State Department on Aug. 17, Rubio announced stricter visa scrutiny for individuals suspected of ties to terrorist organizations, particularly Hamas.

“We are not going to be in partnership with groups that are friendly with Hamas. We’re going to pause those visas,” he said the government will pause the program to reassess visa vetting procedures and investigate any connections between these organizations and the visa acquisition process.

The U.S. resumed processing student visas (F, M, and J categories) on June 18, after a temporary pause starting May 27, and ordered enhanced social media vetting.

U.S. consular officers were instructed to conduct a "comprehensive and thorough vetting" of all student and exchange visitor applicants to identify those who "bear hostile attitudes toward our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles."
<p class="p1">The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/newsroom/news-releases/dhs-to-begin-screening-aliens-social-media-activity-for-antisemitism">announced</a> in April that it would consider anti-Semitic activity on social media and the physical harassment of Jewish individuals as grounds for denying immigration benefits.</p>
Democrats criticized the Trump administration's actions as excessively scrutinizing and suppressing international students.

According to the Open Doors 2024<a href="https://www.iie.org/news/us-hosts-more-than-1-1-million-intl-students-at-higher-education-institutions-all-time-high/"> Report</a> by the Institute of International Education, a record 1.1 million international students studied in the U.S. during the 2023–2024 academic year, a 7 percent increase from 2022–2023.
