Trump Endorses Primary Opponent of House Freedom Caucus Chairman

Former President Donald Trump has endorsed the primary opponent of House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-Va.).

In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, President Trump said that Mr. Good, who initially endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential primary before throwing his weight behind President Trump, is not loyal to him and that “the damage had been done.”

“Bob Good is BAD FOR VIRGINIA, AND BAD FOR THE USA. He turned his back on our incredible movement, and was constantly attacking and fighting me until recently, when he gave a warm and “loving” Endorsement – But really, it was too late,” the former president said in the post.

In the same post, President Trump said that Mr. Good’s primary opponent, Virginia State Senator John McGuire, who served in the Navy, would help further President Trump’s Make America Great Again agenda.

President Trump said that Mr. McGuire “is strong on crime, will protect our great Military/Vets, and will always defend our under siege Second Amendment.”

The Epoch Times has reached out to the Good campaign for comment.

In an apparent attempt to remain in President Trump’s good graces, Mr. Good, along with a handful of other GOP lawmakers, traveled to New York in support of President Trump amid his court case in Manhattan where he has been charged with 34 counts of allegedly falsifying business records related to a payment he made to adult film actor Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. Stormy Daniels is an adult film performer whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

Mr. Good said that the case exemplifies “what lengths the Democratic Party will go to to try to rig or steal another election.”

“They tried to do it in 2020. They’re doing it here again in ‘24 by trying to keep the nominee off the ballot, by trying to keep the nominee from campaigning, by trying to ruin the nominee financially and we’re seeing that today,” he said.

President Trump is not the only one looking to oust Mr. Good in the June 18 primary.

Defending Main Street, a super PAC affiliated with nearly 90 Republican lawmakers in the Republican Main Street Partnership, has been spending more than $450,000 to defeat the GOP incumbent.

Mr. Good has gone against his party numerous times during the current Congress, such as when he was one of eight Republicans who joined all Democrats in ousting former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as House Speaker in October.

Mr. Good has represented Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District since January 2021. He was first elected in 2020 after upsetting incumbent Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-Va.) in a drive-thru convention that took place in lieu of a primary, winning 58 percent of the vote. He then defeated Cameron Webb, a Democrat, in the general election.

Mr. Good was re-elected in 2022 after defeating business owner Josh Throneburg, a Democrat.
