President Donald Trump said the U.N. has not been solving the urgent problems around the world. He made the comments during a luncheon with U.N. officials visiting the White House on April 24. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley led the ambassadorial delegation.

“I encourage the Security Council to come together and take action to counter all of these many threats. On Syria the council failed again this month to respond to Syria’s use of chemical weapons, a great disappointment, I was very disappointed by that. The status quo in North Korea is also unacceptable and the council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korea nuclear and ballistic missile program,” said Trump.

He also said the U.N. budget must be examined so that each cent is well spent.

The president left things on a positive note, saying he sees “fantastic potential and fantastic things ahead” for the U.N.

Ambassadors from 15 countries, who are members of the U.N. Security Council, attended the luncheon along with their spouses.

They also had a briefing with top officials of the Trump administration.
