President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at helping farmers on Tuesday, April 25.
“Today America’s farmers feed not only our nation but millions of people around the world,” the president said at the signing ceremony. “We’re gonna open that up much more for you folks because as you know it’s not totally open to put it mildly.”
The executive order orders the creation of a task force, led by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, to create a report in 180 days outlining all the problems farmers face.
The two biggest are trade and immigration.
Trump is already addressing the former; the latter is more difficult because many farmers depend on migrant workers to plant and harvest their crops. Tracking migrant workers, documented and otherwise, is a huge task. Without the migrant workers, most farms simply could not function.
At the signing ceremony reporters asked about Trump’s proposed border wall.
Trump was adamant. “The wall is going to get built folks.”
“The wall gets built, hundred percent.”
