Two men unknowingly walked into a lion’s den on Tuesday, Aug. 29, when they attempted to rob a bar where off-duty Baltimore County police were having a retirement party.

The stickup happened at Monaghan’s Pub in Baltimore, right across the street from a Baltimore County Police station.

At about 5:30 p.m., two masked and armed men approached the carryout counter of the bar and demanded money from the cash register before taking off.

Staff at the bar told the off-duty officers at the party what had happened and some of the them gave chase and eventually arrested the men.

They charged Joseph McInnis III, 21, and Tyree McCoy, 22, with armed robbery, theft, and other related offenses.

Police were there to celebrate the retirement of a sergeant who had been with the department since 1988.

The bar’s owner, owner Jack Milani, told the Baltimore Sun that he was surprised that someone would attempt to rob his bar because of its proximity to a police station.

“It’s kind of odd you would even attempt it,” Milani told the paper. “[Officers] are always in here. There was a decent amount of them.”

He said he knew the sergeant who was retiring.
