The Tomahawk missiles launched by U.S. warships early April 7 destroyed up to 20 Syrian aircraft. It also damaged fuel sites and a surface-to-air missile system.

The Pentagon released satellite images of what it said was the aftermath of the strikes.

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the strikes in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack, which killed scores of civilians. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government is suspected to be behind the attack.

The Syrian army said the U.S. strikes killed six people, calling it an act of “blatant aggression.” There was no independent confirmation of casualties.

The United States said the intervention was a “one-off” intended to deter future use of chemical weapons.

Many countries have expressed support for the U.S. strikes, while Russian and Iran condemned them. Russia has suspended cooperation with the United States in Syria following the attack.
