U.S. Navy Not Up to Speed, Not War Ready

We’re joined by Jason Beardsley, Executive Director of the Association of the United States Navy. He gives his analysis of the findings of the newly issued “Report on the Fighting Culture of the United States Navy Surface Fleet.”

Congressional oversight of the branch was triggered by a string of high-profile and avoidable accidents involving Navy ships in recent years. The report was conducted by a former Admiral and retired Marine General who interviewed 77 current and former sailors and officers, most anonymously.

Beardsley comments on the state of the Navy and the report’s main findings that include a lack of emphasis on war-fighting; a culture of micromanagement and zero-tolerance for mistakes; risk-averse higher-ups; and training that puts too much emphasis on things like diversity and not enough on combat-readiness.
