U.S. Treasury secretary offers advice on worldwide cyberattacks

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin addressed G-7 conference attendees about cybersecurity. He specifically talked about yesterday’s cyberattacks that affected nearly 100 countries.

He was asked if countries are unprepared. Mnuchin shared his thoughts, “I wouldn’t say it’s unprepared, matter of fact is, as I understand this, this is something that to the extent people had patched their networks it would have been prevented. But what I would say is that this is a reminder to all of us of the importance and focus on cyber security and again we had this on the agenda today, we were speaking about it. I think people felt so strongly about it we agreed to keep it on the agenda for the next few sessions. It’s definitely a big focus of mine in making sure that we protect the financial infrastructure.”

He also talked about President Trump’s decision regarding NAFTA, “We’ve had, you know, very preliminary but productive discussions with the Canadians and with Mexico on NAFTA. We obviously have to wait to start the formal negotiations. I think as you know there were discussions about the president potentially terminating NAFTA, he decided not to do that, he wants to renegotiate it.”

The meeting consists of finance ministers and central bankers who have a goal of protecting financial infrastructures in the event of a cyberattack.
