Most times, as passengers, we tend to get impatient and annoyed when the cab drivers do not follow directions suggested by us, or we have to repeat giving directions many times. We are quick to judge – they are ‘taking us for a ride’. Is it always so?
It can get pretty annoying when you land up some place other than your designated destination. To avoid misunderstandings, this elderly driver, who is a veteran soldier, had put up a sign behind the front passenger seat – so passengers sitting behind could get a clear view.
When a Twitter user, Deen Samson, got into the cab one day, she was truly impressed by the veteran soldier’s zeal to continue working in spite of his physical condition. She put up a photo of the Uber driver along with the sign and it went viral in no time.
The sign read: “Your Uber driver is hard of hearing due to his service in the Philippine Army. Please be patient with him. Thank You.”
The old man received a lot of compliments, as he continued working with his condition.
In 2016, the transportation app started a Project Beethoven to assist and prevent discrimination of hearing impaired drivers. It requested passengers to be patient and informed them of the driver’s physical limitation. It was named after Ludwig Van Beethoven, a deaf German composer – and thus the sign in the cab was initiated.
Just a small step that is initiated with kind and pure intentions can actually do wonders and make life much simple!
