UK baby must be kept on life support for six more days, European court rules

A European court has ordered Britain to keep a terminally ill baby on life support until it can decide on his case.

Ten-month-old Charlie Gard suffers from a rare genetic disease called mitochondrial depletion syndrome.

He has brain damage and cannot move because the disease causes progressive muscle weakness.

His parents want to take him to America for experimental treatment. They’ve even successfully raised 1.25 million pounds (US$1.59 million) on GoFundMe.

The baby’s doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital thought it would be kinder to move him to end-of-life care.

They don’t agree with keeping Charlie on long-term life support. They said his quality of life would be very poor, and that the experimental therapy would not improve his chance of survival.

A UK court ruled in the doctors’ favor.

Charlie’s parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, are now appealing to the European court.

This court has ordered Charlie’s hospital to keep him on life support for six more days until his parents submit a complete application.
