UN pushes for funding to save South Sudanese from starvation
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY AYMERIC VINCENOT Villagers volunteer to carry sacks of food aid from a field following an air-drop at a village in Nyal, an administrative hub of Panyijar county in Unity state, south Sudan on February 23, 2015. Isolated by the Sudd, the world's largest marsh area, population Nyal is protected from the horrors of war that ravaged South Sudan but starved and exposed to disease. Almost all Panyijar County, about 60,000 people dependent on food aid parachuted by the World Food Programme (WFP) says local prefect Tap Puot John, a member of the "opposition" whose troops fighting the government army since December 2013 control the area. South Sudan is suffering. Many parts of the country lack food. The UN wants to help, but isn’t receiving funding.

UN agencies seek at least $1.4 billion. An earlier plea for $1.2 billion was only 14 percent fulfilled.

Other countries on the brink of starvation include Yemen, Somalia, and northeast Nigeria.

Twenty million people in the world risk starving to death, while 100 million worldwide are acutely malnourished.
