UN Security Council unanimously condemns North Korea’s latest missile launch

The United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned North Korea’s latest missile launch on May 16.

“The council is unanimous in condemning the most recent ballistic launch conducted by the DPRK on Sunday,” said Elbio Rosselli, Uruguayan ambassador to the U.N. and president of the U.N. Security Council for May.

“We emphasize the vital importance that the DPRK immediately show sincere commitment to denuclearization through concrete action and stressed the importance to working to reduce tensions in the Korean peninsula and beyond,” he added.

Rosselli spoke to reporters after a closed-door U.N. Security Council meeting on the missile launch. He said the council was also discussing possible new sanctions to treat the situation.

The U.N. Security Council first imposed sanctions on North Korea in 2006 and has strengthened the measures in response to its five nuclear tests and two long-range rocket launches. Pyongyang is threatening a sixth nuclear test.
