The United Nation’s Human Rights Council will investigate widespread allegations of killings, rape, and torture by Rakhine State security forces against Rohingya Muslims in Burma (also known as Myanmar). It will send an independent fact-finding mission to conduct the probe.

Burmese Ambassador Htin Lynn said the move is “not acceptable.” He said Burma’s national commission will conduct its own investigation regarding the abuse.

The resolution was brought by the European Union and supported by countries including the United States. It called for “ensuring full accountability for perpetrators and justice for victims.”

A U.N. report issued last month said that Rakhine State security forces have targeted Rohingya in a campaign that “very likely” amounts to crimes against humanity and possibly ethnic cleansing.

The report was based on interviews with 220 Rohingya among the 75,000 who have fled to Bangladesh as refugees since October.
