US ambassador to UN threatens sanctions on countries helping North Korea

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said the United States is working with China in planning more sanctions for North Korea, and also for countries ignoring existing sanctions.

“I will tell you that if you are a country that is supplying or supporting North Korea, we will call you out on it. We will make sure that everyone knows who you are and we will target those sanctions towards you as well,” Haley said at a press conference before a Security Council meeting.

North Korea fired another missile on May 14. North Korean media announced that the missile could carry a “large, heavy nuclear warhead.”

Haley said North Korea was “trying to intimidate the international community.” And that North Korea could only gain the international respect it craved by abandoning its nuclear weapons program.

Japanese Ambassador to the United Nations Koro Bessho said, “The change has to come from North Korea, not us. Pyongyang must realize that, paradoxically, what they want to achieve by developing nuclear weapons can only be achieved by choosing the path to denuclearization in order to make North Korea stop further provocations and come back to a genuine dialogue for denuclearization.”
